Cupuacu
Cupuacu is a super fruit that contains several vitamins and minerals and nine antioxidants.

Cupuacu (scientifically known as Theobroma grandiflorum) is a fruit of a tropical rainforest tree, which is naturally cultivated predominantly in the Amazon region. The fruits are relatively large, about melon-sized, with a shell similar to that of a coconut husk.

The cupuacu plant is closely related to the cacao plant, and its flavor is often compared with that of chocolate (with a hint of pineapple).

The white pulp of cupuaçu has an odor described as a mix of chocolate and pineapple, and the juice tastes like pear, banana, passion fruit, and melon.

What is cupuacu?

Cupuacu (pronounced koo-poo-ah-soo) is the rich and delicious fruit of the cupuacu tree that grows in the rainforests of Brazil.

Cupuacu trees can grow up to 20 meters (65 feet) in height and have brown bark and bright green leaves. They produce a fruit that is ovular in shape with a brown rind and white, fleshy pulp closely resembling the cacao fruit.

Cupuacu (also spelled cupuassu or copoasu) is frequently used in desserts, juices, sweets, blended drinks, ice cream, and other snacks, and it can be a great alternative to chocolate (taste similar to that made from cocoa).

7 potential health benefits of cupuacu

The Brazilian population has been cultivating cupuaçu for a variety of health benefits that include:

  1. Rich in antioxidants:
    • Cupuacu is rich in antioxidants that help the body fight oxidative stress and protect against health hazards such as pollution, cigarette smoke, and herbicides.
    • In addition, the fruit is a great source of fiber, which supports gut health, boosts feelings of fullness, and helps regulate blood sugar.
  2. Promotes brain health:
    • Cupuacu contains epicatechin, an antioxidant present in cocoa and berries.
    • Studies have reported that epicatechin improves blood flow to the brain, providing benefits for cognitive health, particularly in terms of memory and speed processing.
  3. Improves heart health:
    • Quercetin, a plant pigment in cupuacu, triggers the destruction of fat cells in the human body and prevents fat cell accumulation, resulting in a lower risk of coronary heart disease
    • It is a potent antioxidant.
  4. Boosts the immune system:
    • Quercetin is known for its antibacterial and antiviral effects.
    • This compound is effective against most bacterial strains, particularly bacteria that target the skin, lungs, and digestive tract, and common viruses such as herpes simplex or adenoviruses, which commonly cause cough, sore throat, and pink eye
  5. Reduces inflammation:
    • Cupuacu has epicatechin, an antioxidant with many health benefits, which is linked to a lower risk of inflammation and chronic ailments such as heart disease and diabetes.
  6. Moisturizes skin:
    • Cupuacu butter made from cupuacu seeds is rich in healthy fats and serves as an excellent emollient to help restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier.
    • When applied topically, it locks in the skin’s moisture and helps restore elasticity.
    • This helps increase suppleness and reduce signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles.
    • In addition, its high antioxidant content protects the skin from harmful agents, such as ultraviolet radiation, environmental pollutants, and cigarette smoke.
  7. Good for hair:
    • Cupuacu is naturally rich in both saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids that penetrate the hair shaft and restore hydration, preventing damaged, dull, dry, or frizzy hair.
    • A study suggested that cupuacu butter can act as a traditional conditioner, curbing protein loss and restoring hair hydration.
